#EatDrinkHobart – Cafe Culture

Here are five of the #TwoGirls’ favourite cafes de jour. Places we are pleased to visit and would return to, solo and with guests.
We hope you enjoy them too.

Try sliders or a duck cassoulet for breakfast. For the nostalgic, cereal
and cartoons with almond, pistachio, leatherwood and quinoa granola, kiwi fruit
yoghurt and some play-time on their iPad. Small Fry made a name for themselves
with gourmet doughnuts like peanut butter with freeze-dried raspberries and
rhubarb, strawberry and vanilla jam. Watch while the Chef prepares your meal.

Property of Pilgrim celebrates Tasmanian produce. The considered menu
pushes the envelope. Cape Grim hanger steak with blueberries, horseradish and
sour cream, $20; Pirates Bay octopus, $18; buttermilk spiced alpaca bun, $18. Always
well executed in a hip inner-city enclave. An eye to Paleo too.

The monopoly on Hobart’s morning sunshine, a fifties design and quirky additions
that create a modern café. The diverse menu includes super foods and Paleo;
green juice and breakfast meatloaf. Or try the Chinese fried chilli omelette,
$12.50; or the pumpkin rosti, poached eggs, burnt butter hollandaise, $14. The
ultra-friendly staff wear shorts and tees and take your order by iPod.

North Hobart’s stand out. A thriving café with good coffee and gorgeous food you won’t forget like gingerbread hotcake, caramelised quince, pecans and vanilla crème fraiche, $16. Modern takes on standards like smashed avocado on toast with lemon and Persian feta, $12; and a celebration of breakfast egg dishes like the smoked pork cheek, golden eggs, fennel apple slaw and black pudding, $19.
Berta does not take breakfast reservations.

Our food advice can be based on one meal or many. Menus change and so do chefs and other staff.
Plates and prices where described, are examples of what you might expect only.
This post is based on a recent commission called #EatDrinkHobart a guide for Hobart’s Real Tennis Bathurst Cup – Hobart 13 to 18 April 2015 and appears here with their kind permission.
