Truckle and Co.

Truckle and Co is on the fringe of Hobart’s CBD. A casual glance inside the premises suggests a continental deli of sorts. There are shelves of beautiful bottles, cans and jars of gourmet foods. A closer look reveals some casual seating and even more cosmopolitan goods.

A specialty food store and cheese monger, quality produce is sourced locally, Australia-wide and internationally. Case in point, you’ll be drawn to the window of their overloaded cheese room, with cheeses from here to Europe; a wonder to behold for novices and aficionados alike.

You’ll find a little bit of something wonderful on the shelves at Truckle and Co. For This Girl, it’s the blood orange infused olive oil and the eggplant kasundi; two ingredients I always return for. When Boozy Friday Lunch Friend and I both worked in Bathurst Street, Truckle and Co. (nee Rotolo Botego) was our regular go to. Pondering our next Friday lunch, we agreed we should return for old time’s sake.

Truckle and Co. has a menu of light meals. Enjoy Pigeon Whole Bakers’ toast with coffee on the way to work. For lunch there is a soup of the day and sandwiches. They do a ploughman’s lunch and there are a number of cheese and meat platters, ideally to share. For something a little different, there’s a ‘lunch in a tin’ where you choose from one of their tins of seafood which they’ll dress with rocket and serve with fresh bread. Lunch prices range from the ciabatta sandwich at $9.50 to the house platter for two which includes a selection of cheese, cured meat, antipasti, bread and grissini for $38.

Choose a Gerwurtztraminer, Riesling or Pinot Noir house wine (thanks to Frogmore Creek, Coal Valley) by the glass for $7.50 or any of the store bottles plus corkage.

The few sweets on offer are sourced from Daci and Daci, from $4.50. It’s good to know you can still enjoy one of their lovely pastries if you’re up the other end of the city.

I had the chicken, pesto and Vannella scamorza cheese ciabatta and Boozy tucked into the cheese platter for two. This cheese platter comes with three portions of 80 grams of cheese – chosen by the shop attendant based on what you don’t like (they avoid the things you don’t like ;-)). Not noted on the menu, it came with olives and cured meats. Satisfyingly, the assortment of breads and crackers is more than enough for the platter and your hunger. You’re unlikely to be wishing for more.

You can choose from any of the bottle of wines they sell, pay the retail price and corkage. We enjoyed the Cava Mainegra which retails at $24.95.

We shared a wedge of panforte and a Portuguese custard tart with coffee. A modest but cosmopolitan finish to our luncheon of the same calibre.

A number of people stopped by to browse and make purchases from the surrounding shelves but we ate alone at one of the two shared bar tables.

I took a jar of the kasundi home with me. Truckle and Co. is located at 14 Bathurst Street Hobart.

The café is open from Monday to Friday, 8 am – 5 pm and on Fridays until 6 pm. On Saturday they’re open 9.30 am until 3 pm.

They do cooking classes and special events. The Two Girls enjoyed gnocchi making with them a few years ago and a pizza lunch – where I discovered the kasundi which works a treat with pulled pork and yoghurt. Keep an eye on their website for details.
